Player: Jordan Thompson, DT

247Sports composite rankings: 3-star, No. 415 nationally, No. 25 DT, No. 20 in OH

Why: Winning any recruiting battle in the state of Ohio is a plus for the Wildcats, and they did that with Thompson’s recruit. Sure, there was no Ohio State but there were offers from the likes of Notre Dame, Minnesota and Alabama reported.

Winning a battle over Notre Dame is huge, no matter the player. It also helps that Thompson has a giant upside at a position where the Wildcats need an upgrade in a big way. Thompson is the athletic and physical type of defensive lineman that Northwestern is coveting.

If the Wildcats want to ever be a real contender for the Big Ten West division title, getting more physical and more athletic up front is a key component of that. Thompson may not make an immediate impact, but he will be the most important player in this class when it’s all said and done.
