Jack Cichy to miss 2017 with torn ACL

Wisconsin suffers its first major injury of 2017 just over a week in to camp as senior linebacker Jack Cichy goes down with a torn ACL.

We have the first big blow to the 2017 Wisconsin Badgers football program.

Earlier this week expected starting inside linebacker Jack Cichy was seen talking to trainers and then getting back on the field after an apparent tweak to his knee. It had turned out to be more than a tweak, as the Badgers announced on Thursday morning that Cichy will miss the 2017 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

“You hate it for Jack,” Chryst said in a statement released by UW athletic communications. “You only get so many chances to play this game and you never want to see a guy miss any of those opportunities. He’s one of the leaders of our team and I know he’ll be a big part of what we do moving forward this season.”

Cichy hasn’t had much luck in the injury category as of late, missing the last seven games of last season due to a torn pectoral muscle. Despite that he was still named All-Big Ten honorable mention and racked up 60 tackles, 7.0 TFLs and 1.5 sacks

About the only positive spin that can be put on losing a player like Cichy is that inside linebacker is one of the deepest and most talent-laden positions on the UW roster.

Redshirt sophomore Chris Orr, who suffered the same injury in the first play of the season opener against LSU last season, will step in as the starter for Cichy. Orr comes in having recorded 46 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and 0.5 of a sack in his freshman season of 2015.

Depth shouldn’t be a concern as many observers believe the Badgers were three deep at both inside linebacker positions should anything else happen.
