Summer is heating up in the Midwest and the Badgers are heating up on the recruiting trail as well. After getting three-star athlete Jaylan Franklin out of Michigan to commit on Monday, UW earned its second commit of the week on Wednesday morning.
That commitment came from three-star cornerback Alexander Smith, who becomes the first cornerback to come out of California in the 247Sports composite era. According to our recruiting partners at Badger247, the Culver City, Calif. native committed to the Badgers late last night.

Smith is a unique get for the Badgers, not just because of the state he hails from, but also because of his size. He is listed as 6-0, 165 pounds by 247Sports and while the 165 pounds doesn’t exactly stand out, his height certainly does.
That’s because the Badgers have just one cornerback on their roster currently listed at 6-foot or taller. Caesar Williams, a redshirt freshman on UW’s roster, is the only cornerback listed at that height today.
Smith is commitment No. 13 in the Badgers 2017 class and comes in as the No. 149 ranked cornerback in the class. He’s also the No. 243 ranked player in the state of California. Ted Gilmore was also his lead recruiter and managed to pull his first player from the Sunshine state while at Wisconsin.
While the size and local are nice, it appears the Badgers have a special teams ace up their sleeve with this pickup at a minimum. According to Badger247, Smith averaged nearly 40 yards per kickoff return and had three touchdowns last season. He’s also a very physical cornerback and with some added bulk to the mix this could be an interesting prospect to watch.
Adding Smith to the mix puts UW up to No. 22 in the national 247Sports team rankings and still sit at No. 7 in the Big Ten as well.
